Debika in scuba gear for her first training.

Debika

Debika’s story starts with another group telling her she will not be able to scuba dive. A mutual friend told her about us so she took a chance and came to a free Discover Scuba Experience. She immediately started training. Debika ran into a few issues along the way but never used the terms I quit or I can’t. She is one determined lady and has pushed through to become a certified adaptive diver. Born with Cerebral Palsy (CP) has not limited her in her life goals.

While learning to dive she was working on her law degree. Scuba gave her a place to be at peace, escape and an avenue for pain relief.

At a depth of 60 feet, something magical happens - your body enters a state of weightlessness, and a release of atmospheric pressure, as if floating effortlessly in space! Debika, an incredible adventurer, experienced this unparalleled sensation firsthand. She describes it as an indescribable feeling that surpasses words.

I actually start feeling the release of my chronic pain after I hit the second atmospheric pressure at around 35ft. I call it giving up the ghost. I can feel the weight of gravity lift off of my body and my legs start to straighten out.

Once I hit 60ft and linger there for about 10min I can feel the relief intensify even more my legs get straighter and they even start moving more freely. On this last trip to Roatan I even noticed that my spine felt straighter and I was standing taller with minimal effort. At 60ft I also experience a sense of pure anxiety relief and true serenity!"

We say that we are a family, both in and out of the water. Well our amazing people have proven once again this sentiment goes deeper than just words. While finishing up her degree she really needed a shoulder to lean on. Instinctively Debika reached out to one of her dive buddies and he spent time with her on the phone. He helped her rethink the situation and got her back on track to finish the paper! It’s so heartwarming to see how we all support each other.

"As an adaptive diver with Cerebral Palsy one of the greatest benefits that I experience from scuba diving is chronic pain relief!”
